Truck Driver Training, Part 2

Last blog I touched briefly on a new and different way to look at truck driver recruitment and training. This blog proposes how to structure a graduated training level and skill development.

The first level of skill development is the 12 to 20 days of training at an accredited truck driving school using a recognized syllabus with the student achieving all of the necessary rudimentary skills to acquire the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) although in reality, this 12 to 20 days must be increased to at a very minimum one full 90 day semester. ... Truck Driver Training, Part 1

I originally wrote this concept about seven or eight years ago but through upgrading computers and equipment, somehow it's been lost in the shuffle and I've been asked for it on several occasions so I am redoing the whole thing from scratch. While it maybe somewhat differently worded than the original even expanded upon the concept and basic tenets are still here. Notwithstanding the shake-up of the trucking industry in 2001, there is still and always will be a shortage of drivers to move the continent's freight.... Read More

Beware of Nuts in a Jar of Peanuts!

Recently I purchased a bottle of baby lotion, because I like the smell of the pink stuff they put on babies. For some reason I looked at the back of the bottle and the warning label surprised me, “keep out of reach of children.” REALLY? Where would you set the bottle if you were applying the lotion to your baby?... Read More

Is GPS Safe?

February 1, 2012 just after 8 am Amtrak train 351 rounds a curve near Leoni, Michigan and the engineer puts the brakes in emergency and hits the floor. Blocking the train's path at a crossing is a low boy trailer hauling machinery and it's not moving. Upon impact the trailer is destroyed, the locomotive and two cars are derailed and heavily damaged. The miracle is that there were no serious injuries. The truck driver and several Amtrak passengers were taken to a local hospital, treated and released.... Read More

CSA, Drivers & Carriers Differences

Carriers are still attempting to lead CSA rather than follow CSA. That is the failure of the FMCSA. It is almost like the FMCSA is setting up carriers for the fall. The traps have been loaded and as soon as they see a carrier cross this imaginary line, which has proven not to be the threshold line, they hit the carrier hard.... Read More

CSA Watch

Ray LaHood loves to talk about CSA, the FMCSA safety plan for drivers and carriers. Now one year old, CSA has had a major positive impact on the transportation industry. I think carriers and drivers are to some degree safer even though the majority of drivers still do not have a full understanding about how CSA works. Drivers do have to take a great amount responsibility for things that happen on the road that the driver has no control over under CSA.... Read More

Déjà Vu

I almost cut my hair, it was happened just the other day.
It was gettin' kinda long, I could've said it was in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly,
And I feel like I owe it to someone.

Well, must be because I had the flu for Christmas and I'm not feeling up to par.
You know, it increases my paranoia, like looking in my mirror and seeing a police car.
But I'm not givin' in an inch to fear. I promised myself this year.
I feel like I owe it to someone.

Proposed Driver Fatigue Prevention Act Would Entitle Over-the-Road Bus Drivers to Overtime Compensation

Recently, legislation at the federal level was introduced that, if ultimately passed, is designed to carve out over-the-road bus drivers from the so-called "Motor Carrier Act exemption" from the Fair Labor Standards Act's overtime compensation provisions.

The legislation can be found here.... Read More

Senators Introduce Bill to Strengthen FMCSA, Truck Regulations

Supporters say the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Enhancement Act takes steps to ensure only the safest motor carriers and drivers are able to enter the industry, improve the safety laws governing current carriers and drivers, and increase FMCSA's enforcement tools to remove unsafe and unfit drivers and carriers from the industry. ...
