Trucking's Future Both Exciting & Challenging

Big Truck TV

Given the innumerable issues currently facing the trucking industry, it must be Glen Hodgen's love of a good challenge that has Groendyke Transport's President and COO so excited about the trucking industry's future prospects. Truth be told, Glen actually sees the issues roiling the trucking industry as equal parts challenge and opportunity.

Why do you feel it's so important for the trucking industry to continually be looking for ways improve and become more efficient?

It's very important to our country that we get more efficient at distributing the products we haul for our customers. Trucking is an essential part of our nation's economy and every year we continue to get better and more efficient as our country's distribution network. That improvement comes from continued evolution, innovation, perseverance, and the collective wisdom of our industry - and it really excites me to be a part of that. I love the fact that we continue to see improvements that propel our country forward.

Given all the challenges facing the trucking industry today, aren't you nervous about your company's future viability?

I'm actually excited about the future; but because I like challenges, I typically get pretty excited about the future. One of the really fascinating things about this business is the way we view our own past performance as our biggest competition. That's really what's behind the idea of continuous improvement - looking back at what we've accomplished and asking ourselves, "Could we have done a better job? Could we have been more efficient? Could we have been more effective? Could we have been more successful?"

There's always room for improvement. This business has so many challenging variables: the driver shortage, regulations, decaying infrastructure, sharing the road with distracted drivers. It would be easy to look at these challenges as hard to overcome, or we can look at them as challenges that we haven't overcome yet! At our company, we tend to look at challenges as something to overcome - find better ways to meet them, evolve in our thinking, and, ultimately, do a better job today than we did yesterday, last week and last year.
